War of Terror Underwater: Sarcosuchus VS Mosasaur

Sarcosuchus VS Mosasaur
Sarcosuchus VS Mosasaur

Sarcosuchus and Mosasaur each have their advantages. And because they lived in different geographical environments and different periods, it is difficult to directly compare which is more powerful. Sarcosuchus is an extinct giant crocodile, lived in the Cretaceous period, and it is large, the body length of about 12.2 meters, weighing 8 tons, known as super giant crocodile, emperor crocodile and muscle crocodile, its skull is 1.82 meters long, with 132 teeth.

Mosasaur is an extinct Marine reptile that lived during the Cretaceous period, was also very large, up to 18.3 meters long, and is known as the largest mosasaurus. The mosasaur looked like a giant crocodile, but it had fins on its head, which made it more flexible to swim through the water, and it was so fast that it could swallow a whole shark.

From the above description, both Sarcosuchus and Mosasaur were very powerful creatures, but due to the different environments and times in which they lived, it is difficult to directly compare which was more powerful.

Two biological indicators as below:

Sarcosuchus and Mosasaur Size Diagram

Sarcosuchus

Size – It was approximately 40 feet long (10-12 meters long), or about the size of a prehistoric whale shark

Weight – It was weighed about 15 tons, which is about 7 tons heavier than an adult African elephant

Bite Force – An Sarcosuchus has a bite force of about 10 tons

Speed – The speed in water is about 100 kilometers per hour; The speed on land is about 12 kilometers per hour

Teeth – The giant jaw of Sarcosuchus has 132 thick teeth. The teeth are cone-shaped, suitable for grasping and gripping prey. It has more teeth and a serrated shape

Tail – Long, stiff tail perpendicular to the ground for balance. The Sarcosuchus’s tail was powerful and pointed

Mosasaur

Size – It could reach 50 feet long (18-23 meters long), or about the length of five floors, so giant water animal

Weight – It was weighed about 18 tons, which is about 10 tons heavier than an adult African elephant

Bite Force – An Mosasaur has a bite force of about 30 tons

Speed – The speed in water is about 60 kilometers per hour; it only can live in the ocean and not land speed

Teeth – It has 12-16 maxillary teeth and two premaxillary teeth. The upper jaw holds 8-16 pterygoid teeth, while the lower jaw has 14-17 dentary teeth

Tail – The tail was almost similar to those of sharks but inverted

How do Sarcosuchus hunts?

The Sarcosuchus is a semi-aquatic reptile, mainly carnivorous, and is one of the excellent predators. It hunts the prey in the following ways:

Latent predation: Sarcosuchus lurk in the water, waiting for prey to approach, then pounce, gripping the prey with sharp teeth and dragging it into the water with powerful neck muscles.

Swim to hunt: Sarcosuchus are good swimmers and cruise through the water in search of prey. Once they spot their prey, they quickly approach, then grab it with their mouths and pull it into the water.

Ambush predation: Sarcosuchus usually ambush their prey near or in shallow water. They quietly lurk in or near the water’s edge, waiting for prey to appear. Once the prey appears, the Sarcosuchus will suddenly appear and grab the prey with its teeth.

Predation on land: On land, Sarcosuchus often lurk in the grass waiting for prey to approach. Once they spot their prey, they run to it and grab it with their powerful neck muscles.

In general, Sarcosuchus is intelligent and patient predators, and they can wait a long time before choosing the best prey. Their sharp teeth and powerful neck muscles are key to their hunting success.

How do Mosasaur hunts?

Mosasaur not only rely on its own speed and bite force, but also have excellent hunting skills and high intelligence. It has also been shown that the animals can improve their hunting skills by observing and remembering complex environments, and by continuing to learn.

Every time the mosasaur hunted preys, it didn’t just keep its big mouth open and wait for food to automatically enter its mouth. Instead, it uses an extremely clever hunting strategy. First, it swims around on the bottom, finds an prey, and slowly approaches, waiting for the prey to respond. If the prey ducked or tried to run away, the Mosasaur would adjust its position and speed accordingly to keep up with the prey. But if the prey stops, the Mosasaur will take the opportunity to approach it. When its mouth is close to the prey, it uses a powerful bite force to swallow the prey in one bite.

This reveals a remarkable intelligence and ability to appreciate the natural instinct to adapt to the environment. The way the Mosasaur behaved shows its ability to adapt to its environment and self-adjust, and also makes people think deeply and look at the perspective of science and nature.

Conclusion:

After the above comparison, it is really hard to say who would win if the Sarcosuchus and Mosasaur fought each other. After all, these two giant creatures don’t live in the same environment. But based on the above hunting skills and body data, if the mosasaur had been in the water, there is a good chance that it would have beaten the Sarcosuchus.

Question: You are the preeminent animatronic dinosaur maker, can you build 1:1 lifelike Sarcosuchus and Mosasaur models?

Answer: We’ve already made animatronic Sarcosuchus model! Of course, unfortunately, we have not made animatronic Mosasaur model, but we have made a large liopleurodon model. Here is a video for reference.
