Spinosaurus, whose scientific name translates to “spined lizard,” is a large theropod dinosaur that lived in northern Africa during the Late Cretaceous. Known for their large size, large sails, and long skulls, Spinosaurus was a water-friendly dinosaur. The emergence of Spinosaurus made people realize that during the Mesozoic period, dinosaurs were not only dominant on land, but also found traces of their activities in water.

The genus Spinosaurus currently has only one valid species, Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, named by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer in 1915. The original model (BSP 1912 VIII 19) was stored in the Munich Natural History Museum, but was destroyed during World War II, and the rest of the world’s knowledge of Spinosaurus was lost. That was until paleontologist Nizar Ibrahim and his colleagues unearthed a new partial skeleton in southeastern Morocco designated as the new model of EgyptoSpinosaurus (FSAC-KK 11888), published in the journal Science in 2014.

The Egyptian Spinosaurus reached a length of 15 meters and weighed 8.4 tons. Its skull was long and narrow, similar to that of modern crocodiles, with straight, conical teeth similar to those of crocodiles.
