How to Forge Animatronic Animal Sculpted Skill

Sculpting Animatronic Zebra

In a previous post, we talked about how manufacturing animatronic animals is a test of a company’s production skills. Now, let’s talk more about what it takes for a sculptor to get good at animatronic animal modeling. This is good reading for new sculptors in the industry.

First: Start by finding pictures of the animal from all angles (GOOGLE, Baidu, BING or FLICKR are recommended).

Second: Remember the 1:3 rule (if you sculpture a dinosaur, take 3 times as long to mold an animal).

Third: Please try to sculpt the animal with a knife that is half shorter than the size of the sculpting dinosaur. Because the outline area of the animal is usually smaller than the dinosaur, shorter knife is easier to sculpt the animal.

Fourth: The face and neck of the animal must be compared to the real picture you downloaded (unlike dinosaurs, animals are highly recognizable, once a small mistake can easily make the audience sardonic).

Fifth: When modeling animals, please try to thin them. After sticking on the fur, animals will naturally be fatter than the current shape, especially the tail and limbs.

Keep in mind the five essence of animal sculpted skills. With a lot of sculpted practice, the new sculptors in the industry will become experts in manufacturing animatronic animals.
