Find one dinosaur diagram you favorite

Finding one or several dinosaur pictures you like that is one of the necessary prerequisites. Usually, when we make a dinosaur suit, we need at least two pictures: one is a full side view of the dinosaur, and the other is a picture of the dinosaur’s face facing forward. These two pictures are helpful for us to shape the overall form of dinosaurs. The client is requested to provide us with these two pictures as much as possible.

Then, if it’s a client who has no knowledge about dinosaurs at all, how should they provide pictures to us?

Here are two methods for you:

Weld overall dinosaur steel structures

After choosing the desired pictures, experienced mechanical engineers will weld the steel structures of the entire dinosaur. The internal steel frame materials is usually made of stainless steel. The stainless steel is lightweight and structurally strong and tough, making it a good choice for the later dinosaur actors. It is very convenient for them to wear and handle.

Before welding, we fabricate the internal space structure based on the following two points:

(A).Inform us of the height of the actor.
(B).Inform us of the weight of the actor.

After knowing these two points, we can customize the interior space of the dinosaur suits appropriately. Generally speaking, we usually leave the space a little larger. This way, it can accommodate the current actors’ outfits as well as those of actors with larger body sizes.

Foam dinosaur shaping applied to the steel structures

After the steel frame has been welded, workers will stick high-density sponge with a standard density of 40 onto the steel frame. After waiting for two hours, the yellow glue inside has solidified, then the experienced sculpting masters will start shaping the foam! This kind of manual shaping technique requires extraordinary skill. It involves using knives to carve out the detailed features of the dinosaur’s face, the muscle lines, and the body structure one by one. If the graphic designer’s skills are not up to par, the end product might turn out to be something bizarre.

During the shaping process, the sculptors need to carry out their tasks in accordance with the following steps:

(A). Based on the pictures of dinosaurs provided by the client (which can be downloaded from our website or found in other libraries), shape the overall appearance of the dinosaurs.
(B). It is necessary to let the sculptors know the height and weight of the wearers, so that when shaping the foam, there will be sufficient space for the wearers to wear it comfortably.

Create lifelike skin textures

After shaping the foam into the dinosaur form, then the workers have to painstakingly create the skin patterns of the dinosaur on the foam. This is a job that demands high concentration. Workers need to operate electric soldering irons on the foam and focus their attention for 2 to 3 hours before they can customize the appearance of the skin textures. There are usually two skin patterns to be produced.

Skin like cracked tree bark

Skin like dense & dots

The cracked bark skin pattern is usually characteristic of Tyrannosaurus rex, Albertosaurus, Carnotaurus, and others; And densely dotted skin is usually characteristic of Triceratops, Pachycephalosaurus, Ankylosaurus, etc.

Silicone skin-grafted works

After the sponge skin texture works are completed, the skin grafting work of the dinosaur costume began. Usually, workers apply silicone evenly on the sponge, making sure that every crevice is filled with silicone. Then, they wait for 2 to 3 hours for the silicone to dry before considering the job done. The skin made of silicone has elasticity, just like the soft skin of humans.

With the advancement of technological exploration, apart from silicone skin grafts, we have also developed a skin grafting technique, that using a mixture of fabric + LOGO glue. This has significantly reduced the weight of the dinosaur costume (5-7 kilograms).

Characteristics of two skin grafting techniques:

If you plan to use dinosaur suit for a performance that involves a lot of audience interaction, it is recommended that use those made of silicone.

If you are using it in a stage or a children’s theater, for a small amount of artificial contact, you can use dinosaur costume made of fabric.

Paint lifelike dinosaur skin

After the dinosaur skin grafting is completed, our highly skilled coloring master will mix oil painting pigments, glue and gasoline together and pour them into the prepared spray gun. Based on the real-life references of dinosaur skin (usually in the form of pictures or videos, and the references are also specified by the clients), the lifelike dinosaur skin tones are printed out.

In this technical process, generally two steps need to be accomplished:

(A).Paint out the skin color of the realistic dinosaur.
(B).Fill the cracks on the dinosaur skin with brown or black oil-based paints.

Especially after the completion of the second step, the entire dinosaur skin color would be like that of a wild beast from the prehistoric world, as if it were real.

DIY family-version dinosaur suit

1.Draw the dinosaur outlines on one side of the corrugated fiberboards. You need to do it on both sides.
2.Cut out the dinosaurs along the lines. (two sides)
3.Cut out the appropriate width and glue the two dinosaur figures together.
4.Cut out some triangles, assemble them into a cone shape, and then stick them onto the back and buttock of the dinosaur (to form the spikes and tail on the dinosaur’s body).
5.Make two holes on the two sides of the dinosaur so that the hands can stick out through the holes.
6.Then use the brush to draw the dinosaur eyes, and add some decorations.
